"That you're terrifying?" he asked, his drawl becoming exaggeratedly languorous, almost a purr. "I adore it.

She leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder, and closed her eyes. The king's arms came around her, and she shivered once, as though letting something fall away.

The Widow sets herself down in the rocking chair, Star perching on the edge of the porch steps, gently fanning her skirt about her legs against the slight chill of the night air. The old vampire fills her pipe, setting the bowl burning with a match which she flicks to the side after shaking out. She puffs, drawing on long breaths of the heady tobacco, beginning a slow, creaking rock in the chair. Star thinks she sees the plumes of smoke that drift about taking on a golden shimmer, though that's probably just the firelight and the moon above. She contents herself watching the way it drifts. Mesmerizing in way.

"Do you smoke?" Suddenly the Widow asks. She lifts her pipe a bit, clearly in offer.

Star shakes her head. "Only cigarettes, and not that often."

The Widow hums, tapping the tip of the pipe on her teeth. For a while, they sit in silence, only the sound of the rocking chair on the old boards of the cabin porch and the distant sounds of the forest around the Widow's direct property disturbing it.

It's nice. A quiet that Star realizes she...missed, in a way. A stillness, but not a lack. A bit like being sheltered in a hollow of stone, while waves came in and out like a steady, endless heartbeat-

"Do you drink?" The Widow then asks, just as suddenly as her first question.

Star blinks, drawn back yet again from her ruminating, and finding a thread of annoyance in the sudden interest in her vices, or lackthereof. And specifically this one. She turns to give the Widow a long, pointed look, brow tight.

"No. Thank you," she says, stiffly.

She gets a long ,shrewd gaze returned in kind, the old woman's dark eyes keenly examining her. As though she's lying or something. It does make something in Star's gut twist, first to look down, and away, wrapping her arms around her knees as she draws them up, close to herself.

Then. The Widow laughs. The cackle wasn't that friendly, hard and low, and Star has been laughed at enough times to know when it's at her expense. The ashamed feeling turns acidic with anger.

"What a little prude," the old vampire jeers with a grin, and then shakes her head. "Lighten up, girlie. You'd think from your face you hadn't just survived what most people never live long enough to experience at all!"

I'm not sure what the overlap is between cos and iwtv fans but ever since I started thinking of strahd under a similar lens as Lestat I understand him more as a character. There's something so raw about bing immortal and yearning without being able to convey yourself properly. So all that comes out are acts of desperation and violence
